The Fifth World Skeptics Congress, sponsored by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP) and by the Italian Committee for the Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CICAP) is to be held at the Congress Theatre "Pietro d'Abano", Abano Terme (a few minutes away from both Padua and Venice), Italy, October 8-10, 2004.
The first such congress was held in 1996 at the State University of New York at Buffalo; the second congress, sponsored by CSICOP and the German Society for the Scientific Investigation of Para-Science (GWUP), was held in 1998 at the University of Heidelberg, Germany; the third, cosponsored with the Australian Skeptics, was held at Sydney University in Sydney, Australia, in 2000; and the fourth, sponsored by CSICOP, was held at the Hilton, Burbank, California, in 2002.
These congresses have proven to be very successful in bringing together the best known and most effective speakers in the promotion of science, critical thinking, and education. Our intent is to bring together the leading lights in the skeptical movement and we are eager to have you be part of this event. The overall theme is "Solving Mysteries": the World's top experts meet to present a general survey on the most relevant issues related to strange beliefs and extraordinary claims. Thus, there are sessions on parapsychology, alternative medicine, frauds hoaxes and myths, the psychology of magic, education and skepticism, urban legends, a meeting of local skeptical organizations, and other topics. There will also be a series of speciale events, such as a special evening on Galileo Galilei, an incredibile magic show, a banquet with opera singers, a skeptical-science fair and more.
